該更新可以對主機的更新和下載進行優化，當用戶處於有碳排放強度數據的地區時，系統會安排在夜間的特定時間進行更新，因為這時的大部分電能是來自於電網中的低碳源。
這旨在減少對化石燃料的依賴和二氧化碳排放，甚至可能為用戶節省一些錢。需要使用關機(節能)模式才能激活該功能。已加入“Insider”計劃的Xbox Series X|S用戶將看到主機會自動更新到該模式。

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, sums up the strategy by emphasizing on social media that “the Xbox team recognizes that if video games bring joy to many, they also have an impact on our environment. Today, we’re proud to share some of the work we’re doing to offer downloads and updates to carbon-sensitive games.” In a study published on Xbox Wire, the American tech giant explains that it wants to run a one-time update on all Xbox consoles of this and past generations to put them all into the most efficient power-saving mode. The update in question will also introduce a new setting for the console’s active clock, which will offer a convenient control system for aspects such as instant ignition. According to Blaine Hogley of the Xbox team, “Updating the power settings once will reduce power consumption when the console is turned off and will not affect performance, gameplay, or the console’s ability to receive nightly updates for games, apps, or system software. Remote features will still be available while the console is on, however it will not be supported to wake up the console from a power-saving state.” Activating this mode results in a significant reduction in power consumption of the Xbox Series X/S (0.5W off vs. 10-15W idle). Through these interventions and the introduction of power savings across the Xbox One family of consoles, Microsoft says that “Xbox is now the first carbon-inclusive console that allows the console to wake up at a time of day when it can use renewable energy from the local grid. Windows 11 also offers a similar carbon awareness feature and both will save you money and help reduce your carbon footprint.”
