蘋果在WWDC 2024活動上隆重推出了其全新的 AI 系統“Apple Intelligence”，並宣佈將在今年秋季登陸iPad、iPhone和 Mac 平臺。
遺憾的是，蘋果 AI 系統似乎存在一些限制，iPhone 方面目前只有iPhone 15 Pro和iPhone 15 Pro Max可以使用。當然，尚未發佈的iPhone16 系列四款機型也將支持 Apple Intelligence。不過，自 WWDC 以後，我們就經常能看到蘋果用戶詢問“為什麼要設硬件限制”？
在 WWDC 2024 訪談節目中，蘋果人工智能 / 機器學習主管 John Giannandrea、營銷主管 Greg Joswiak 和軟件工程主管 Craig Federighi 對於這個問題進行了解答：
Giannandrea：“大語言模型的推理計算量非常大。因此，這非常依賴於設備的帶寬、NPU 規模，以及設備本身的性能，所以需要足夠強的性能才能使這些模型跑出夠看的速度。理論上，你可以在非常老的設備上運行這些模型，但運行速度過慢以至於完全可以說毫無用處。”
So these models, when you run them at run times, it's called inference, and the inference of large language models is incredibly computationally expensive. And so it's a combination of bandwidth in the device, it's the size of the Apple Neural Engine, it's the oomph in the device to actually do these models fast enough to be useful. You could, in theory, run these models on a very old device, but it would be so slow that it would not be useful.
主持人 Gruber：“所以這絕對不是為了賣新 iPhone 而強行設的限制，對吧？”
So it's not a scheme to sell new iPhones?
Joswiak：“沒錯，怎麼可能呢。否則，像我們這般聰明，肯定會連最新的 iPad 和 Mac 也一併設限，你說是吧？”
No, not at all. Otherwise, we would have been smart enough just to do our most recent iPads and Macs, too, wouldn't we?
蘋果軟件工程主管 Craig Federighi 表示，公司推出的所有新功能首先考慮的都是儘量讓老設備也能用，但對於 Apple Intelligence 來說，“這就是必須的硬件…… 在 iPhone 上運行如此強大的模型是一件非常了不起的事”。
據IT之家所知，蘋果iPhone 15Pro 系列機型搭載的 A17 Pro 芯片具備 16 核神經引擎，比 iPhone 15 和iPhone 15 Plus中的 A16 芯片快了 2 倍，每秒可執行近 35 萬億次操作。
Federighi 還表示，內存也是 AI 功能所需的另一個重要要素，因此，所有兼容 Apple Intelligence 的設備至少都需要擁有 8GB 內存。
