Microsoft is doing everything it can to bring the planned deal with Activision Blizzard through. In order to placate the antitrust authorities, Call of Duty was also secured as part of a 10-year deal with Nintendo – but the British authorities expressed concerns. However, Microsoft itself is convinced of the possibility of a switch implementation of the shooter series. A few weeks ago, Microsoft and Nintendo entered into a 10-year deal that will ensure Call of Duty on Nintendo consoles for that period. The Redmond company wants to appease the antitrust authorities and convince them to go through with the planned purchase of Activision Blizzard. Above all, Sony is resolutely opposed to this and fears that important game brands will be excluded from the PlayStation in the future. So far, however, these 10-year deals around Call of Duty do not seem to have completely convinced the authorities; With regard to Nintendo, the British Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA for short, is particularly critical of this. In a new report, the authority states that the new contract between the two companies “does not entail any certainty that Call of Duty will be available on a Nintendo platform”. Although Microsoft would have promised this in the deal with Nintendo to underline that Call of Duty should not be exclusive to the Xbox, the “technical limitations” of the switch compared to the PlayStation and the Xbox leave an actual release of Call of Duty doubt there. Microsoft has already responded to this report and is convinced that Call of Duty can be optimized for the switch: “The game engine that powers Warzone is mature and has been optimized for a wide range of hardware (starting from Xbox One released in 2015 to Xbox Series X). Warzone supports PC hardware with GPU cards released back as far as 2015 (and thus before the release of the Nintendo Switch in 2017).” They also point out that they have “a long history of optimizing game performance for available hardware”. Accordingly, one is convinced that titles like Warzone or Modern Warfare 2 will also be optimized for the switch, similar to what other developers have done with Apex Legends, DOOM Eternal, Fortnite or Crysis 3, for example. To be honest, all of these titles look noticeably worse on the Switch than on the competing platforms, but: They just run on the Nintendo console! The CMA’s decision regarding the Activision Blizzard acquisition is expected by April 26 of this year.
