Foreword

Foreword

There is a story behind the story.

At the moment I write this, that story reaches back more than twenty-five years, to Pathways into Darkness and an alien god slumbering beneath the Yucatan. It is not a secret plan or a coded revelation, but it is, nonetheless, a tradition: the lore of Bungie's metaverse, a set of motifs that are shared, forgotten, and then reborn, like Guardians, to carry on into new worlds. Whether you grew up haunted by Marathon's terminals and that final image of a bloody hand, whether you chose a side in Myth's war between Light and Dark, or if you've just wondered, in passing, what's going on all with the Bungie sevens—you've seen the hints.

The Grimoire belongs to that tradition. It let a whole new generation of storytellers dive into cryptic arcana and intimate insight that doesn't belong in a traditional cinematic story. Nowhere else could we set up hints to the identity of the Nine in random dialogue in Destiny, and then pay them off, years later, in an expansion to Forsaken. There are old puzzles still waiting to be solved--what's with Ghost Fragment: Ghosts, anyway?

But the Grimoire hides another secret tale. It is the story of the people behind the myths, and the web of collaboration, inspiration, and tribute that binds them together. There is not a single word in Destiny's Grimoire, or in the lore books that came after it, that can be called one person's work.

The Fallen are an incredible example of this process. Every word we write about the Fallen is touched by the sound of their language, by their models and animations, and even by the cloth simulation that gives them capes and banners. Not a single story you read in this volume could exist without the work of all those artists and engineers. Even the investment designers, who help make this world worth returning to over and over, shape our imagined relationship to the Fallen by teaching us what we gain when we fight them.

What can a writer add? More meaning, we hope. Something for your brain to chew on after the shooting and the looting. Why are these Fallen here? What do they want? How do they feel about me, and what motivates them to fight on and on when we are so very hard to kill? Maybe their stories will make you feel a scrap of empathy for that Dreg scurrying to obey her Captain's orders. Maybe you start to see yourself in the Fallen. All they want is to survive. So do we. Maybe we'd end up like them, if we suffered the same terrible fall. Maybe there but for the Traveler's grace go we.

This second volume of the Grimoire anthology is a collection of stories that pull on those threads, punctuated by the works of Piotr Jabłoński, Bungie's concept artists, and graphic designers. It captures that deep tension between the Fallen as genocidal raiders and the Fallen as sympathetic hard-times survivors. It asks us whether the chasm of violence and fear between our species is too wide to heal.

So many writers left their indelible mark on this lore, whether directly or through powerful inspiration and collaboration. So many others worked to design, illustrate, and publish it. We owe a very special debt to the localization teams who patiently, tolerantly translate our invented words and alien scripture--none of this could have happened without theirmonumental efforts.

Above all, we are incredibly grateful to those who collect and study Destiny's lore. You are the reason this book exists, and the reason that more like it can be written. But it also exists because so many people put so much into growing Destiny's world. Take away even one of them, even one hour of their work, and everything would be different.

Remember them.
